People frequently ask me how I got started in wildlife art. I often think it was by accident, but, perhaps it was not.
In the early ‘70’s, I was reading a Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine when I came across a page of various animals and birds drawn by Charles Beckendorf of Fredericksburg, Texas. The beauty and simplicity of his pencil and pen and ink drawings impressed me. Although I had never taken any art lessons nor had any art supplies, I did have an old set of India ink pens that I used in college in an engineering graphics class. After hours of practicing with pencil and these ink pens, I discovered I had been blessed with the ability to duplicate on paper what God has created in life.
Through the years I have tried various other techniques such as watercolor and colored pencil. In the end, however, the beauty of a very detailed wildlife drawing in India ink simply is more appealing, I believe.
